Tips for New Executives


Starting out in a new role as a Chief Information Officer (CIO) or Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is both exciting and challenging. There’s often a sense of urgency, with expectations coming from all directions.


Based on experience and ongoing conversations with other leaders, here are three areas that may be helpful to focus on during your first few months, tips for new executives.



1. Focus on What Will Make a Lasting Difference

You’ll likely face a long list of requests from across the organisation almost immediately. With limited time and resources, it’s worth stepping back and applying a thoughtful filter. Which initiatives lay the foundations for simpler, more effective operations? And which help explore emerging technologies that could shape your organisation’s future? It’s not always easy, but taking a longer-term view can make your early decisions more impactful.


2. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask for Support

Even the most experienced leaders benefit from a sounding board. Whether it's a mentor, coach, or someone who's walked a similar path, having a trusted person to challenge your thinking and help refine your approach can be invaluable. These conversations, handled confidentially, can help bring perspective and confidence at a time when there’s still a lot to figure out.


3. Shape the Culture from the Start

That first team session—whether an off-site or a simple group meeting—often sets the tone. Encouraging openness, respectful discussion and active participation early on helps shape the way people work together. It may seem like a small step, but creating that environment can lead to stronger collaboration and better outcomes. Ultimately, success comes down to behaviours and focusing on the right things as a team.
