Where Digital Strategy Really Sits

Stepping into a CIO role from a GM position creates one of the biggest shifts in executive responsibility.

The scope expands quickly, and with that comes new expectations - not just to run technology well, but to shape how the organisation competes and grows. For many leaders, this transition is where the real learning begins.

One of the most important differences you’ll encounter is the distinction between Digital strategy and traditional IT strategy.

These two are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same. Understanding the gap is critical if you want to lead with confidence and credibility in the role.

Digital strategy is fundamentally outward-looking. It focuses on how technology reshapes the business itself. That could include exploring new digital business models, improving and personalising customer experiences, or integrating partners and ecosystems in new ways. It’s about growth, relevance, and competitiveness - not just systems. In many organisations, this is where CIOs begin to influence strategy at the executive table.

Information Technology strategy, on the other hand, is primarily inward-looking. It centres on how technology operates inside the organisation. This includes modernising platforms, improving delivery capability, strengthening cyber resilience, and enabling productivity across functions. It’s about optimisation, efficiency, and reliability. While this remains essential, it’s no longer the full story of the CIO role.

As you move into this broader remit, a natural question emerges… how well am I actually doing? Transition points are rarely obvious while you’re in them.

Many CIOs underestimate how valuable structured reflection can be during their first few years in the role. Without it, progress can feel reactive rather than intentional.

That’s why I introduced a free CIO Assessment this year - to help leaders step back, reflect on where they’re strong, and identify where focused development will create the biggest lift.

Whether you’re newly stepping into the role or evolving within it, clarity around Digital versus IT strategy is one of the fastest ways to accelerate your impact.

The CIO role is expanding - and those who embrace that expansion deliberately are the ones who shape the future of their organisations.
