The Executive Differentiation Formula

Over the years, I’ve observed that there are four elements that really enable CIOs to sustain their value to the organisation and create meaningful differentiation within their industry. These are Clarity, Connection, Capability, and Coaching, which lead to executive differentiation.
Clarity
Clarity begins with strategy. It’s about ensuring the foundational elements are in place, automating where possible, and driving simplicity across the business. It also requires an eye to the future - horizon planning and identifying where innovation might emerge, whether in the technology function or across the organisation.
Creating clarity is not just about documents and frameworks; it’s about bringing people together to explore what’s ahead and identifying the practical tactics that will make the strategy real.
Connection
Workshops are a great enabler here. They work best when participants arrive with open minds, prepared to listen more than they speak. Respectful conversations are essential, as they create the conditions for insight and understanding. Connection is about more than meetings; it’s the genuine alignment that comes when people are willing to explore different perspectives together.
Capability
Often, clarity and connection lead to the realisation that an organisation needs to adjust its structure or invest in new capabilities. This is common for CIOs both early in their tenure and a few years into their role. Conducting a capability assessment and designing with principles in mind helps create an organisation that is fit for the future. This might mean tactical appointments in the short term, while also building a pipeline of capability to sustain long-term success.
Coaching
Finally, there is the importance of coaching. External support can play a vital role in challenging thinking, encouraging new perspectives, and helping leaders identify their next steps. A good coach doesn’t provide answers; they create space for reflection and guide leaders to discover them for themselves.
Clarity, Connection, Capability, and Coaching are not one-off activities. They are ongoing practices that help leaders stay grounded, responsive, and forward-looking. When embraced consistently, they enable executives and their organisations to thrive.
