Finishing The Year Strongly

It’s Melbourne Cup week - that time when many organisations in Australia lose a bit of rhythm. Although the public holiday is only observed in Melbourne, it often feels like the whole country slows down.
I’ve seen it firsthand. When I was leading technology teams, progress would pause around Tuesday, and it could take the rest of the week to get back on track.
That said, I’ve always enjoyed this time of year. When I lived in London from 2001 to 2010, I’d often return to Melbourne in early November - catching up with family, friends, and enjoying the casual atmosphere that Cup week brings. It’s a natural point in the year to stop, breathe, and then rally for the year-end,
But for executives and leaders, this week also signals something important. There are roughly six productive weeks left before the Christmas break, and January is typically very quiet. That makes now the perfect moment to refocus and finish the year well.
1. Reassess and Reprioritise
Start by listing your key initiatives. For each, note how far it’s progressed and how complex it is. Then decide what can realistically be completed before year-end. Reprioritising now helps ensure energy is channelled where it matters most.
2. Communicate Progress Weekly
Once priorities are set, create a clear rhythm of communication. A short weekly update on progress keeps everyone aligned and accountable through this busy period. It’s easy for focus to drift in December, so simple reminders go a long way.

3. Reflect and Learn
This is also a great time to pause and think about what’s been achieved. What worked well? What slowed things down? Taking stock before the year ends gives you a head start for 2026.
4. Write an End-of-Year Note
Finally, write a short reflection - what you’d like to achieve before the year closes, and how you want to feel when you look back in December. Revisit it in a few weeks to see how you went.
As the year winds down, maintaining focus while staying balanced is key.
Small, consistent actions now can make a big difference to how you finish - and how you start the next one.
