Where Executives Expand Their Impact

At the start of each year, many executives naturally focus on goals, delivery, and operational priorities. But one theme continues to surface in recent conversations is the need to step into a broader leadership role.

Not just leading a function but shaping the community you’re part of - inside and outside the organisation. This is where executives expand their impact.

The most impactful executives aren’t defined solely by what they deliver, but by the influence they build around them.

Broader Leadership Responsibility

True leadership expands beyond functional excellence. Many executives talk about developing future leaders, shaping succession, and making stronger appointments. That intent matters. Saying “I’ll develop the person” reflects a shift from managing outcomes to shaping capability. It signals a willingness to invest in people, not just performance, and to see leadership as something multiplied through others rather than owned individually. Executives must consciously choose to invest in the right people.

Leading In External Communities

Some executives are exploring ways to contribute beyond the walls of their organisation. Presenting at events, participating in industry forums, or joining advisory boards creates new perspectives and credibility. These experiences strengthen leadership maturity and widen strategic thinking. But the key question is alignment: what does your organisation actually need from you? External visibility should complement your role, not compete with it.

Becoming A Role Model Internally

Broader leadership doesn’t always mean going outward. Sometimes it means stepping further inward. If you’re reporting to a CEO, how can you become a stronger role model to peers? Influence inside the executive team often creates the greatest leverage. Modelling curiosity, collaboration, and long-term thinking can elevate the entire leadership culture - without changing your title or remit.

Creating Influence With The Board

Executives in technical or specialist roles have a unique opportunity to shape board understanding. Reverse mentoring is an underused lever. Sharing emerging technology insights or translating complexity into business value builds trust over time. It also creates a more informed audience for future strategic conversations, especially when investment or transformation decisions arise.

Ultimately, broader leadership is less about doing more and more and more about choosing deliberately.

Where you invest your time shapes the influence you create - with your peers, your board, and the communities around you.
