Many leaders believe their value lies in staying close to every decision, every programme, and every operational detail.
But the reality is different.
As you grow in seniority, your impact increasingly comes from where you place your attention. High-performing technology leaders don’t manage everything - they enable leadership capacity and focus on enterprise relationships. - elevate impact by letting leaders lead.
Create Space For Your Leadership Team
If you’re still deeply managing the function, you’re limiting scale. Your leadership team can't grow if you occupy all the oxygen in the room. Creating space isn’t about disengaging - it’s about elevating. It means trusting your leaders to own outcomes, represent the function, and develop their voice. This shift allows you to step into a broader role where your influence spans the organisation, not just the technology team.
Shift From Function To Relationships
At senior levels, the real work is relational. Your value comes from how well you connect technology to business ambition. That requires time with peers, stakeholders, and customers - not being buried in internal mechanics. When you move from managing technology to managing relationships, you reposition yourself as a strategic partner rather than a functional leader.
Be The Lighthouse, Not The Storm
In workshops, I often encourage leaders to be the lighthouse. Strong, calm, and insightful. A lighthouse guides without creating noise. In contrast, some leaders unintentionally become the storm - generating confusion, over-involvement, and unnecessary complexity. Your tone, presence, and clarity shape how others lead. Stability builds confidence across your ecosystem.
Communicate With Precision And Insight
Clarity is a leadership multiplier. Laser-like communication grounded in facts moves conversations forward. Avoid being overly elaborate or complex. You don’t need to light up the entire sky - sometimes a focused beam is enough. Precision signals confidence and helps others align faster.
Leadership maturity is often defined by what you stop doing.
Creating space, guiding with clarity, and focusing on relationships allows you to lead at the level your role truly demands.
