Beyond AI

You don’t need to be a technologist to lead in 2026, but you do need to understand the digital forces shaping business.
The essentials are now clear: flexibility, trustworthy data, secure systems, and the right people to use them well. These are Beyond AI
Modern platforms are the foundation. Deloitte’s Tech Trends 2025 report highlights that organisations with modular, cloud-based systems can adapt faster to market change. The goal is agility — building technology that can flex and scale with your business rather than hold it back.
High-quality data remains the real advantage. KPMG’s Data Governance in the Age of AI study found that 62% of organisations say poor data governance is their biggest barrier to using AI effectively. Executives must ensure their teams treat data as a strategic asset, not an afterthought.
Hardware and infrastructure may sound technical, but they’re critical. McKinsey’s Semiconductor Outlook and Deloitte’s research both note that performance, security, and cost depend on the right investment in chips and edge computing. Understanding where computing happens - and why - can make or break digital performance.
Cybersecurity and privacy now belong in the boardroom. Deloitte stresses that speed must be balanced with trust, as every new connection or system widens exposure. Executives should view security as part of customer experience and brand reputation, not just compliance.
A new generation of tools is emerging: agentic or autonomous software that can perform complex tasks. McKinsey’s Seizing the Agentic AI Advantage describes these systems as “virtual colleagues” that can transform productivity. But KPMG warns that governance and oversight must evolve just as fast to prevent errors and bias.
Sustainability is increasingly a technology decision. Deloitte’s Global TMT Predictions highlights that data centres and chip lifecycles significantly affect emissions and reporting. Choosing greener technologies is both an environmental and commercial imperative.
Finally, technology’s success rests on leadership. McKinsey’s Superagency in the Workplace found that while nearly all firms invest in AI, only 1% feel mature in using it. The missing link is governance and training - ensuring people can confidently lead through digital change.
For 2026, the leadership checklist is simple: flexible platforms, reliable data, resilient systems, governed automation, sustainable choices, and empowered teams. These are not future ideas - they’re today’s essentials for staying ahead.
